Reflection

As I sit on the plane waiting to leave Las Vegas having spent the week out here at the 10X Growth reflecting on the event I realise it’s not just the event that motivates me so much.

I’ve been on 4 occasions now and brought 17 members of #TeamEMJ with me on those trips, spending I guess over £100,000 on the training.

Now, don’t get me wrong the learning, insights and pure motivation is well worth it on its own. Taking the team twice to Miami and twice to Vegas and the bond that builds is an added but valuable bonus, however, the sense of pride I get from the impact the trips have had on people’s lives are probably the most important part for me.

I was asked by someone why I spent so much money on the trips and did I get the best return on investment from the conference? A good question and hard to measure an exact ROI but receiving a text off one of team earlier today thanking me and saying the whole event was nothing short of life changing makes it all worth it. I think that’s the third or fourth time I’ve been told this over the years.

What’s the return on investment for a life changing experience? I don’t know but I do know I’m so happy to spend that money knowing that’s the impact it has!

On a final note, they’ll be some very cool news tomorrow as a result of this trip, keep an eye out!

Gold Medal Moments

The #relentless pursuit of #success can be tiring, but if it was easy everyone one would do it. If you could win Olympic gold with just a few hours practise it wouldn't be the most watched sporting event globally. You do need some balance, you can't be 100% the whole time, but the I really can't stand the term 'work, life balance' in my head at least it implies I work purely so I have the money to enjoy the weekend. I want to enjoy both. I spend way to many hours in work to not enjoy what I'm doing just so I can enjoy 48 hours a week of which I might sleep for 16 of those hours! The secret in my mind is the classic 'find a job you love and you never work again' but make sure you also take enough time to recharge your batteries. Make sure you have the best weekend you can have. Do something that creates memories. We call them at EMJ Gold Medal Moments. You get the buzz of winning your own Gold! It can be whatever you want, so as an example this weekend myself and Daniel have given our box at Wembley up to 8 of #TeamEMJ to go and watch the Carabao cup final! Newcastles first league cup final since the mid seventies. So for Robert Hancox a Newcastle fan is literally a once in a lifetime experience (so far) I'm taking my two boys to watch Liverpool Vs Crystal Palace. We decided a while ago rather than try and go to lots of games which might mean them missing their usual weekend activities we'd try and go 2 or 3 times a season but do it in style. So tonight we'll be watching from the directors box. Win, lose or draw the experience will become a Gold Medal Moment. These are just examples, obviously you do what works for you. But my two points are 1, don't live for the weekend it's such a waste of a week. Find a job you love and 2, make sure you do make the time that allows you to enjoy the success that job will then almost certainly create. Have Gold Medal Moments. Ying and the Yang

We've been incredibly fortunate at EMJ over the last 10 years or so and had great #success . We were awarded the Queens award last year, we placed on the Times 100 fastest growing businesses and were listed as one of the best places to work. Individually, I won the BDA entrepreneur of the year and was announced as one of the LDC 50 most ambitious leaders. It's great to get all this accolade but it's just reward for all the hard work the team put in, but what does it all really mean? Well I'm sure it all means different things to different people, some may begrudge it, some may be embarrassed by it, some maybe proud. There are a whole list of things people could think. For me, yes I'm proud of course, but what I really love about it all is the opportunities it creates. These are many, from creating employment, we currently employ 70 people, that, due to our success have jobs they love and get well paid for whilst making a real difference to the quality of healthcare. (We always looking for more to join the team!) This week however, it gives me personally two opportunities that I really appreciate. Due to the network I've nurtured over the years I've been invited to the House of Lords, this on it's own is a great opportunity. But the real opportunity for me is the chance to meet with Lord Bird again and discuss with him the wonderful initiative that he has come up with working with the Big Issue to help people from a disadvantaged background. Most importantly for me how I can help and have a real impact. Having an impact is something that really drives me to succeed. The more success I have in life the bigger the impact I can have on as many people as possible.
